The highest level of Revit's element hierarchy: Category to Family to Type to Instance. Every element in a project belongs to exactly one category - Walls, Doors, Windows, Structural Columns, Mechanical Equipment - and the category controls fundamental behavior: which parameters are available, how the element schedules, what line weights and graphics it gets by default, and which views it shows up in.
Categories are fixed by Revit itself (you cannot invent a new one), which is exactly why they map so cleanly onto external classification systems like Uniclass or MasterFormat - they are the stable anchor point that makes automated classification and scheduling possible.
