Copies of a Revit view (usually a large plan split across several sheets) that stay linked to the original - editing shared elements in one updates all the others automatically. A plain "Duplicate" copy is a completely independent view; a dependent view stays tied to its parent, which is exactly what's needed when the same large floor plan has to appear split across matchlines on multiple sheets.
