The broad goal that IFC, openBIM, and formats like glTF all serve: the ability for different software tools - made by different vendors, used by different disciplines - to exchange model data without losing or corrupting its meaning along the way. Perfect interoperability is genuinely hard: geometry usually survives a round-trip between programs, but rich data (parameters, classifications, relationships) is exactly what tends to get lost or mangled in translation.

It is worth treating as a spectrum rather than a yes-or-no property - "how interoperable" a given exchange actually is depends heavily on which specific software pair, which format, and which data you are asking about.
