Data that describes other data - a file's author and creation date, or an object's classification code, rather than the file or object's actual content itself. A door family's geometry is data; the fact that it was last modified on a specific date, by a specific person, tagged with a specific Uniclass code, is metadata - exactly what a CDE's audit trail and a data dictionary manage.
