How to Get a Free Student License for Revit

Autodesk, the company behind Revit, offers a free educational license to students and educators - the full version of the software, for personal and non-commercial use, valid for one year and renewable for as long as you're enrolled.

How to get it:

  1. Create an Autodesk account - sign in or register at the Autodesk Education Community.
  2. Select "Student" as your role, and choose your school or university from the list.
  3. Verify your student status - usually with your school email address, or by uploading proof of enrollment (verified through a third-party service, SheerID, in just a few minutes).
  4. Download Revit - once approved, you get the full professional version, not a limited trial.

The license renews automatically each year as long as your student status is still active, so it won't expire mid-course. One thing to keep in mind: it's meant for learning and personal practice, not for commercial or paid project work.

What computer do you need for Revit?

Students ask this before every course, so here is the practical answer - based on Autodesk's official requirements for Revit 2026 and what actually holds up on real projects.

The official minimum is a 64-bit Windows 10/11 machine, a 2 GHz+ processor, 16 GB RAM, a DirectX 11 graphics card with 4 GB memory, and 30 GB of free disk space. That will install and run Revit - for learning and small exercise projects it is genuinely enough.

What we actually recommend if you are buying a machine now:

  • RAM: 32 GB. This is the single upgrade that matters most. 16 GB survives coursework; real multi-discipline projects eat it alive.
  • CPU: prioritize single-core speed, not core count. Most of Revit still runs on one core - a fast 6–8 core processor beats a slow 16-core one.
  • Storage: SSD, no exceptions. Revit opens, syncs, and saves large files constantly. 512 GB minimum.
  • GPU: mid-range is fine (4–8 GB). Revit was historically CPU-bound, but Revit 2026 introduced a new GPU-accelerated graphics engine - so a decent card (e.g., an RTX with 8 GB) is becoming a smarter investment than it used to be.
  • Laptop or desktop? A desktop gives more power per shekel, but a decent "creator" or gaming laptop with the specs above handles Revit fine - and you can bring it to class.

One honest warning: do not buy a thin ultrabook with integrated graphics and 8 GB RAM "just to start". Fighting a struggling machine while learning a demanding program is a motivation killer. Meet the recommended spec and Revit becomes a non-issue.
