The specific purposes a BIM model is put to on a project - such as clash detection, 4D scheduling, cost estimation, or energy analysis - each requiring a different level of model detail and data. Rather than asking "do we need BIM," a project team asks "which BIM uses do we need" - because a model built for design visualization isn't automatically ready for 4D scheduling or quantity takeoff. Planning BIM uses upfront (a concept popularized by Penn State's BIM Planning Guide) is how a BEP decides what level of development each element actually needs.
