The British Standard that predates even PAS 1192 - BS 1192:2007 introduced the collaborative, disciplined file-naming and layering conventions that later BIM standards inherited: a consistent naming code (project-originator-volume-level-type-role-number), and the idea of a shared, structured folder environment for a project team.

Most of what BS 1192 pioneered is now folded into ISO 19650's naming and CDE requirements, but the standard is still occasionally referenced directly, especially for its file-naming convention, which many UK and international offices still use as a base template.
