Designing a building so it can be easily reconfigured or repurposed for a different use later, rather than only ever serving its original function. A generous floor-to-floor height and a structural grid that doesn't fight future partition walls are both design-for-adaptability decisions - cheap to make at design stage, expensive to retrofit later.
