A defined part of the design - often specialist elements like curtain walling or MEP - that the contractor takes responsibility for designing, even under an otherwise design-bid-build contract. It's a common middle ground between the two extremes - the client's team retains design control over most of the building, while handing the specialist parts to whoever is actually best placed to design them.
