What Is AutoCAD?

AutoCAD is a 2D drafting and design software first released by Autodesk in 1982. It replaced hand-drawn blueprints with digital lines, arcs, and shapes you can edit, print, and share. For over four decades it has been the global standard for technical drawing.

At its core, AutoCAD is a drawing tool. A "wall" in AutoCAD is just two parallel lines. A "door" is a rectangle and an arc. The software doesn't know - or care - what those shapes represent. It draws exactly what you tell it to.

Autodesk has expanded the AutoCAD family with industry-specific versions:

  • AutoCAD Architecture - intelligent wall, door, and window objects
  • AutoCAD MEP - for mechanical, electrical, and plumbing
  • AutoCAD Civil 3D - for civil engineering and site design

Even so, the foundation remains drawing-based: each plan, section, and elevation is a separate file you create and manage on your own.


What Is Revit?

Revit is a Building Information Modeling (BIM) platform, first developed by Charles River Software in 1997 and acquired by Autodesk in 2002.

The idea is fundamentally different from AutoCAD: you build a virtual 3D model of the building, and every drawing you need - floor plans, sections, elevations, schedules, 3D views - is generated automatically from that single model.

A wall in Revit is an actual wall object with thickness, material, fire rating, cost, and more. Raise a floor level and every wall adjusts. Place a door and it cuts into the wall automatically and adds itself to the door schedule - no manual counting.

Revit comes in three disciplines:

  • Revit Architecture - for architects and interior designers
  • Revit Structure - for structural engineers
  • Revit MEP - for mechanical, electrical, and plumbing engineers

In most large projects, all three disciplines work in a federated model - linking their models together to coordinate and catch clashes before construction starts.


The 6 Key Differences Between Revit and AutoCAD

1. Drawing vs. Modeling

AutoCAD is drawing-first. You create each view - plan, section, elevation - as a separate 2D drawing. A design change means updating every drawing individually.

Revit is model-first. Build one 3D model and the software generates all views automatically. Change anything in the model once - every plan, section, elevation, and schedule updates instantly.


2. Dumb Geometry vs. Smart Objects

In AutoCAD, elements carry no meaning. A rectangle might be a window, a room, a column, or nothing at all. The software treats everything as pure geometry.

In Revit, every element is a smart object with properties. Walls know they're walls. Doors know which wall they belong to. Rooms calculate their area automatically. This intelligence drives automatic schedules, quantity takeoffs, and energy analysis.


3. Manual Coordination vs. Live Coordination

AutoCAD projects typically layer drawings with Xrefs (external references). If the architect moves a wall, the structural engineer must be notified and update their drawing separately - manually.

Revit links discipline models in real time. Clash detection tools automatically flag where a structural beam hits a duct or a pipe runs through a column - before anyone breaks ground.


4. Manual Schedules vs. Automatic Schedules

In AutoCAD, building a door schedule means counting doors by hand, creating a table manually, and updating it every time the design changes.

In Revit, schedules are live views of the model database. Add a door - it appears in the schedule. Change a door's fire rating - the schedule updates immediately. No manual tracking whatsoever.


5. Learning Curve

AutoCAD is easier to learn. The concept is intuitive: draw lines and shapes.

Revit has a steeper learning curve. You need to understand BIM concepts, families, types, parameters, and project structure before you work efficiently. But once you do, your output quality and speed multiply.


6. Industry Scope

AutoCAD is used across dozens of industries: architecture, mechanical engineering, electrical, civil, manufacturing, and more.

Revit is purpose-built for the AEC industry (Architecture, Engineering, Construction). It's not the right tool for designing a machine part - but for coordinating a building across multiple disciplines, it is unmatched.


Do AutoCAD and Revit Work Together?

Yes - and in practice, many firms use both on the same project.

  • Revit can export to DWG format (AutoCAD's native format) for consultants who haven't adopted BIM yet.
  • AutoCAD drawings can be linked into Revit as underlay references.
  • Many construction documents are still issued as DWG or PDF, so Revit projects frequently export to AutoCAD format for coordination with contractors.

As of 2025, 90% of new commercial projects use BIM workflows - but AutoCAD remains essential for renovation work, detail sheets, shop drawings, and any situation where DWG compatibility is required.


What About Price?

Both are subscription-only today, and Revit costs roughly three times more than AutoCAD per year - which is why offices adopt it deliberately, not casually. For you as a learner, two things matter more than the price tag: students get both completely free with an Autodesk educational license, and at work the employer pays for the license. Price should not decide which one you learn - your skills are the investment, not the software.

Which Should You Learn?

If you're entering the AEC industry today: learn Revit. It is the global standard for BIM, and most firms now require it for architectural and engineering roles.

If you work outside building design - in manufacturing, civil infrastructure, or electrical - AutoCAD or a specialized vertical may be more relevant.

If you're an AutoCAD user moving into architecture or construction: Revit is your logical next step. The workflow feels different, not harder - and once you're fluent in Revit, you'll wonder how projects were ever coordinated any other way.
