Interoperability solves "can Software A read Software B's file today," while digital continuity solves the harder problem of "will this asset information still be usable in 20 years, after the software that created it is gone." It's why long-lived asset owners increasingly prefer open, well-documented formats (IFC, COBie) over proprietary ones for anything meant to outlive the current toolchain.
