LOD defines how detailed and reliable an element in the BIM model is at a given stage. It answers the question: "How much can I trust this model element, and what information does it contain?"

The standard LOD scale runs from 100 to 500:

LOD Stage What it means
100 Concept Element exists as a symbol or mass. Size and location are approximate.
200 Schematic Design Generic element with approximate geometry and size.
300 Design Development Specific geometry, exact dimensions, location, and orientation.
350 Construction Documents Includes connections to adjacent elements. Ready for coordination.
400 Fabrication Detailed enough for manufacturing and assembly.
500 As-Built Verified in the field. Represents the building as actually constructed.

LOD is used in the BEP to specify what level each model element must reach at each project milestone.
