Exactly what information is needed, for whom, and when. The newer, ISO 19650-era term that is gradually replacing the LOD/LOI pair in specifications. LOIN flips the question around: instead of asking "what LOD should this element reach?", it asks who needs which information, for what purpose, at which milestone - and requires exactly that, no more.

LOIN is defined in the European standard EN 17412-1 and covers three kinds of content:

• Geometrical information - detail, dimensionality, location, appearance
• Alphanumerical information - properties, classifications, identifiers
• Documentation - datasheets, certificates, reports

The goal is to stop over-modeling: information nobody asked for costs time and money to produce and maintain.
