Instead of exporting an IFC or Navisworks file and re-importing it whenever something changes, Speckle keeps live, versioned "streams" of model data that different tools can push to and pull from - closer to how a code repository works than a traditional file exchange. It's gained traction as a lighter, more automatable alternative to file-based interoperability, especially for teams already scripting with Dynamo or Grasshopper.
